Union Rural Development, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh ChOuhan has challenged Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding his assertions about the Central Government’s decision to conduct a caste census in the upcoming census. ChOuhan remarked that Rahul Gandhi should consider taking lessons to better understand the Constitution. He further said that the Congress party’s claims about conducting a caste census in Telangana are misleading. He said only a survey has taken place there.
During a discussion with journalists at the BJP state office on Wednesday evening, Chouhan emphasized that it is the government, not Rahul Gandhi, that will determine the timing of the census. He assured that the caste census will be conducted in a manner that promotes social harmony. Shivraj accused the Congress party of fostering division within society. He contrasted Rahul’s approach with the BJP’s commitment to “Sabka Kalyan, Sabka Vikas” (Welfare for All, Development for All). He asserted that the caste census would serve as a foundational element for good governance and would be carried out transparently.
Why the Cong govt did not conduct a caste census during its long tenure
Chauhan explained that the caste census will focus on social and economic interests, recalling that the Central Government had previously instituted a 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections without causing societal unrest. He expressed skepticism about the motives of the Indi alliance, questioning why the Congress government did not conduct a caste census during its long tenure in power. He referred to the historical opposition from Congress leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, to caste-based reservations.
He criticized the Congress party for spreading misinformation and confusion, claiming that their actions in power contradicted their current demands. Chauhan concluded by asserting that the caste census would proceed without creating societal tension.
