Rahul Gandhi seeks govt support for Banarasi sari weavers

New Delhi, Dec 11 (UNI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Thursday reiterated his concerns about the struggles of traditional craftsmen, particularly those involved in the production of Banarasi saris, and urged the government to extend support to revive the dying art.
In a fervent address to the Lower House of Parliament on Wednesday, Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, emphasized the hardships faced by Banarasi sari weavers.
He called for government assistance to preserve this traditional craft and stressed the need to support the revival of the fading art form, highlighting the challenges encountered by traditional artisans.
“Yesterday, I spoke in Parliament about the beauty, culture, and history of Banarasi saris – the threads of which are woven with the soul of India,” the MP said. “Banarasi silk saris and embroidery evoke images of India’s rich cultural heritage. This centuries-old tradition is not just a fabric, but an integral part of our civilization, festivals, and celebrations.”
Gandhi also recounted a recent meeting with a delegation of weavers from Banaras, who expressed their frustration with the lack of government support.
“We are also ‘Make in India,’ but we are not part of any government schemes,” they said, highlighting the struggles faced by millions of small craftsmen and artisans across the country. UNI SKA AAB
