Quake measuring 7.9 hits off Russian Far East, tsunami warning issued

Vladivostok, July 30 (UNI) A 7.9 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday struck near Severo-Kurilsk, a town in Russia’s Sakhalin region, prompting a tsunami warning and the evacuation of residents from potentially hazardous areas, regional governor Valery Limarenko said on social media.

Emergency services are operating in enhanced mode, assisting residents as they move to higher ground for safety, Limarenko said, assuring the public that the situation is under control and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety and restore normalcy.

No serious damage or casualties have been reported so far.
