Quake measuring 5.1 hits Meghalaya

Shillong, Jan 5 (UNI) An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale rocked Meghalaya and other northeastern states, triggering panic among residents this morning.

According to the North East Seismological Center (NESC) here in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong, the tremor was felt at 04:17:40 IST, with its epicentre located at latitude 26.37 N and longitude 92.29 E, at a depth of 50 km in Assam’s Morigaon district.

There were no reports of any casualties or damage as yet.

The seven northeastern states — Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur – are considered by seismologists as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.
