New Delhi, Sharing a photograph of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela holding her son and laughing, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday said that the world misses men like former South African President more than ever today. “The world misses men like Nelson Mandela more than ever today. His life was a testament to truth, love and freedom”, she tweeted on his 101 birth anniversary.
At a time when the voices are growing louder to appoint Ms Priyanka as Congress president in the absence of Rahul Gandhi, she also said that ‘Uncle Nelson’ had told her that she ought to be in politics long before anyone else did. “To me, he was Uncle Nelson (who told me I ought to be in politics long before anyone else did!). He will always be my insipration and my guide”, she added.
“Laughing heartily at my son’s fancy topi in 2001”, Ms Priyanka further said World is observing July 18 as Nelson Mandela day as a respect to the leader, who had spent 27 years in jail for his fight against the white-only rulers in the African country before being elected as first black president in a fully representative democratic election.
As a follower of Gandhian principles, Mandela had good rapport with India. He was with the India’s highest civilian award- the Bharat Ratna.
