Bhopal: In recognition of his visionary and innovative efforts to strengthen mental health, stress management and sensitive policing within the Madhya Pradesh Police, Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana has been conferred the inaugural Heartfulness Change Maker Award. The award was announced at an international programme held on December 21 at Kanha Shantivanam, Hyderabad, in the August presence of the Hon’ble Vice-President of India.
The honour was formally presented on Tuesday at the Police Headquarters by representatives of the Heartfulness Institute, with Inspector General Ruchivardhan Mishra handing over the award on behalf of the organisation.
Under DGP Makwana’s leadership, the Madhya Pradesh Police has embraced the philosophy that effective policing is not limited to law enforcement alone, but is deeply rooted in mental balance, emotional stability and compassionate conduct. Acting on this vision, the force systematically introduced Heartfulness meditation in 2022, which was further strengthened through a formal Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Heartfulness Institute in February 2025.
As part of the initiative, regular meditation practices are being imparted to new recruits across all police training institutions in the state. At present, nearly 1,000 trained Heartfulness trainers are active, while the department is also developing its own in-house instructors. The programme has led to visible improvements in decision-making, efficiency and emotional well-being among police personnel, while also enhancing the police’s image as a more sensitive and trustworthy institution.
IG Administration Ruchivardhan Mishra described the initiative as a pioneering model in the country, with the potential to be replicated nationally. The Heartfulness Institute lauded DGP Makwana’s leadership as being grounded in compassion, service and human values, stating that the Madhya Pradesh Police has demonstrated that good policing begins with strong and balanced individuals from within the force.
