New Delhi, Jan 25 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu, addressing the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations, underscored the profound significance of voting, calling it “not merely a political expression, but a reflection of citizens’ faith in the democratic process of elections.” The event, held annually on January 25 to mark the foundation of the Election Commission of India, highlights voter awareness and participation in the world’s largest democracy.
Speaking to a gathering of election officials, young voters, and dignitaries, President Murmu praised the inclusive nature of Indian democracy. “The strength of our democracy lies not only in the sheer size of voters but also in the depth of the democratic spirit. Even the oldest voters, differently-abled voters, and those living in remote areas exercise their right to vote,” she noted. She commended the Election Commission for its continuous efforts to ensure that “no voter is left behind,” citing numerous programmes that have increased electoral awareness across the country.
President Murmu highlighted this year’s theme, “My India, My Vote: Indian Citizen at the heart of Indian Democracy,” as a powerful reminder of the essential role each voter plays.
She said, “Voting is a means for citizens to express their aspirations and gives concrete expression to our constitutional ideals of political and social justice and equality.” Emphasising the constitutional principle of ‘One Person, One Vote’, she applauded the faith the nation’s founders placed in the wisdom of the common people and praised Indian voters for vindicating that faith, earning global respect for India’s democratic system.
The President also called on citizens to exercise their voting rights with responsibility and awareness, free from “temptation, ignorance, misinformation, propaganda, and prejudice.”
Addressing young voters in particular, she congratulated them on receiving their voter identity cards and declared that “today’s voters are the architects of India’s future.” She expressed confidence that the youth will contribute meaningfully to nation-building through their active participation in elections.
Since its inception in 2011, National Voters’ Day has played a critical role in celebrating the democratic right to vote and encouraging electoral participation. This year’s Voters’ Day, graced by the President herself, reinforces the foundational democratic spirit that continues to unite India’s diverse population in the exercise of their electoral franchise.
