Powerful earthquake strikes eastern Afghanistan

Kabul, Sep 1 (UNI) A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck eastern Afghanistan today, near the border with Pakistan, with tremors felt across parts of Pakistan, including the capital Islamabad nearly 400 km away.
More than 115 injured people have been taken to hospitals in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, where casualties are being reported,BBC reported officials as saying.
According to seismological data, the epicentre was located about 27 km (17 miles) from Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province and Afghanistan’s fifth-largest city.
The quake comes just days after Nangarhar province was battered by severe flooding between Friday and Saturday, which destroyed properties and left five people dead, local authorities said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 00:47:41 IST, with its epicentre located at latitude 34.50°N and longitude 70.81°E, at a depth of 160 km. “EQ of M: 6.3, On: 01/09/2025 00:47:41 IST, Lat: 34.50 N, Long: 70.81 E, Depth: 160 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” NCS posted on X.
The initial tremor was followed by multiple aftershocks ranging between magnitudes 4 and 5. A 4.7-magnitude quake struck at 01:08 IST at a depth of 140 km, not far from the original epicentre. It was followed by a 4.3-magnitude tremor at 01:59 IST at a depth of 140 km, and later, a stronger 5.0-magnitude quake at 03:03 IST at a shallower depth of 40 km, the NCS reported.
