‘Poor AQI continues in Delhi; Mercury to rise in coming days’

New Delhi, Feb 22 (UNI) With not much respite for the citizens, the average Air Quality Index of the national capital on Sunday was recorded in the ‘poor’ category, with a reading of 229, said the pollution monitoring agency Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The Commission for Air Quality Management in Delhi and the NCR areas had recently revoked the pollution control actions under its Graded Response Action Plan’s stage- II, after witnessing some improvement in the air scenario.

Now only the GRAP stage- I measures remain in effect across the Delhi- NCR, while the agency has asked the implementing agencies concerned to intensify these measures to prevent further deterioration of the AQI levels.

Meanwhile, when the air quality falls under the ‘poor’ category, which is when the index values are between 201- 300, it may cause breathing discomfort to most of the people if the exposure is prolonged.

Talking of the national capital’s weather, the sky was mainly clear during the day, with the maximum temperature recorded at 29.7 degrees C, which was 4.2 degrees C above the season’s average.

The minimum temperature during the early morning hours on Sunday settled at 12 degrees C, which was almost normal for the season, with just 0.2 notches above the season’s average.

For Monday, the weatherman has forecast a mainly clear sky with mist during the morning hours.

The minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday are going to hover around 13- 15 degrees C and 29- 31 degrees C, respectively, as per the weather agency.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Delhi of the IMD has said that a rise by about 2 deg C in minimum and maximum temperatures during the next two to three days is expected, with no change thereafter.

According to the weatherman, temperatures are likely to be above normal (1.6 deg C to 3.0 deg C) to appreciably above normal (3.1 deg C to 5.0 deg C) during the next six days.

“Maximum temperatures are likely to be appreciably above normal (3.1 deg C to 5.0 deg C) to markedly above normal (5.1 deg C or more) during the next 7 days,” IMD said.
