Ponting challenges Shastri series forecast

Perth, Nov 21 (UNI) Australian cricketing legend Ricky Ponting has reiterated his belief that Australia can reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 series victory over India, staying resolute despite contrasting predictions from former India coach Ravi Shastri.

Ponting addressed Shastri’s suggestion that the five-match series could swing 3-1 in favour of either side, with India’s chances hinging on a strong start.

Despite respecting Shastri’s perspective, Ponting recalled a lesson learned in 2020 when Sunil Gavaskar confidently predicted an Indian comeback after their catastrophic 36-all-out in Adelaide—a prediction that ultimately came true as India rallied to win the series 2-1.

“I hope Ravi doesn’t get the better of me like Sunny did back then,” Ponting remarked with a laugh, before standing firm on his prediction. “I’ll stick with 3-1 Australia.”

Ponting cited Australia’s well-rounded batting and worldclass bowling as reasons for his confidence. He highlighted the importance of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne scoring runs and the potency of Australia’s bowling attack, which he believes can outperform India over the series.

India’s campaign, Ponting noted, could face challenges, especially with Rohit Sharma returning mid-series, potentially disrupting their settled combination.

Ahead of the first Test in Perth on November 22, Ponting also reflected on the mental preparation required for a series of this magnitude. While India’s players engaged in intra-squad matches, Australia opted for a different approach, with some key players, including Pat Cummins and Steve Smith, participating in limited-overs matches before taking a rest.

“Preparation is tricky,” Ponting said. “It’s not just about skills; it’s about being mentally and physically fresh. Your skills don’t leave you, but clarity of thought makes all the difference.”

As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy commences, all eyes will be on the teams’ performances in a series that promises high-stakes cricket and fierce competition.
