Police Freeze Bank Account After Rs 37 Lakh Raised Through Rumour-Mongering Video in Uttam Nagar Case

New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) Dwarka District Police has initiated legal action against several social media accounts accused of spreading misleading and inflammatory content related to a recent incident in Uttam Nagar , where a 26-year-old man was beaten to death after a disagreement during Holi.

This murder case led to riot like situation in Uttam Nagar.

According to police, authorities coordinated with social media platforms to take down objectionable posts and accounts involved in rumour-mongering. So far, 14 takedown requests under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act have been sent to X, while eight similar requests have been issued to Instagram to remove the identified content.

Police also discovered that certain individuals attempted to collect money from the public using a QR code circulated in a viral video linked to the incident. Investigations revealed that around Rs 37 lakh had been credited to the suspect bank account within the last two days. Acting promptly, authorities directed the bank branch concerned to freeze the account and block all credit and debit transactions to prevent further financial activity.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kushal Pal Singh said, “Spreading unverified or false information on social media is a punishable offence under relevant provisions of law. Strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb public peace through misinformation or malicious online activity.”

Police have warned that individuals spreading rumours or misleading narratives online will face strict legal consequences.
