New Delhi, Feb 20 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on February 22 to inaugurate and dedicate to the nation development projects worth around Rs 12,930 crore, including the full commissioning of the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor and the launch of the Meerut Metro.
According to a release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, at around 12:30 PM, the Prime Minister will flag off the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train at Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station. He will then undertake a metro ride to Meerut South Station.
At about 1 PM, he will inaugurate and dedicate multiple projects and address a public gathering.
The Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation the entire 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor and inaugurate the remaining sections of India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
These include the 5-km stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and the 21-km section between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.
With a design speed of 180 km per hour, the Namo Bharat system is India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System, aimed at connecting major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut with the national capital at high speed.
Sarai Kale Khan, the originating station of the corridor, is among the four Namo Bharat stations being commissioned during the event. Strategically located as a multi-modal transport hub, it seamlessly connects Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT and Ring Road.
The other three stations being inaugurated — Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram — are located in Meerut.
In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Meerut Metro services between Meerut South and Modipuram. Notably, the Meerut Metro will operate on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat trains, ensuring seamless integration of intercity and intra-city travel.
With a maximum operational speed of around 120 kmph, the Meerut Metro is set to become India’s fastest metro system. It will cover the entire stretch in approximately 30 minutes, including all scheduled stops.
The integration of Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro on shared infrastructure is expected to set a new benchmark for coordinated urban and regional transit in India. The initiative is aimed at providing high-speed connectivity between cities while facilitating swift local commuting within Meerut.
The projects are aligned with the government’s broader vision of transforming urban mobility through modern, efficient and sustainable public transport systems. According to the official statement, the integrated transit network will help decongest roads and significantly reduce vehicular carbon dioxide emissions.
The large-scale investment in the region is expected to improve ease of living, enhance regional connectivity and spur economic growth across western Uttar Pradesh.
During his address, the Prime Minister is expected to underline the importance of next-generation infrastructure in driving India’s development and strengthening sustainable urban transport solutions.
