PM Modi speaks to SL Prez Dissanayake, pledges continued support after cyclone Ditwah devastation

New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Monday, extending heartfelt condolences to the people of the island nation following the devastation wrought by Cyclone Ditwah.

“The Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives and widespread devastation in Sri Lanka in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah. He conveyed that the people of India stand in firm solidarity and support with the people of Sri Lanka in this hour of need,” an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

President Dissanayake, in turn, conveyed his deep gratitude for India’s assistance and appreciated the swift deployment of rescue teams and relief material. He highlighted the timely and effective nature of India’s response efforts after Cyclone Ditwah struck last week, causing multiple fatalities, extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, and displacing thousands.

PM Modi assured President Dissanayake that India will continue to extend all necessary assistance during the ongoing relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding phases.

The statement added that India, operating under Operation Sagar Bandhu and in line with its Vision MAHASAGAR and established position as the ‘First Responder,’ will continue its support as Sri Lanka works to resume public services and restore livelihoods.

The two leaders agreed to remain in close touch as Sri Lanka coordinates recovery operations. This swift humanitarian outreach reinforces the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two nations, which encompass development, trade, and security cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
