New Delhi, Feb 5 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, accusing the party of harbouring deep-rooted hatred towards Sikhs and showing repeated disrespect to Parliament and its members.
Referring to a recent controversy, the Prime Minister said a Congress leader had termed a Sikh MP a “traitor”, calling it a grave insult not just to an individual but to the Sikh community and their Gurus.
“Yesterday, a cunning-minded youth leader of Congress called a Member of this House a traitor. Their arrogance has reached the seventh sky,” Modi said.
He pointed out that many leaders had left Congress over the years, yet none were branded “traitors”.
“This word was used yesterday because the MP is Sikh. This is an insult to Sikhs and their Gurus. Congress is filled to the brim with hatred towards Sikhs,” he alleged.
The Prime Minister said the Congress leader could have expressed regret over the remark but chose not to, reflecting what he described as “deep-seated animosity”.
He further stated that calling someone from a family that has sacrificed for the nation a traitor merely for changing political ideology was “unacceptable”.
“The word ‘traitor’ is not a small one. How can a country tolerate its citizens being labelled traitors? If such people don’t sink Congress, who will?” he asked.
Modi also criticised the Opposition’s conduct in the House, alleging disrespect towards presiding officers.
He said papers were thrown when an MP from Assam was in the Chair, calling it an insult to Assam and its people.
He added that a Dalit MP from Andhra Pradesh was similarly disrespected while presiding.
“The Congress has immense hatred for the people of Assam. Since the public has abandoned them, they now see citizens as enemies,” Modi said, recalling earlier protests by the Opposition when Assamese cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika was awarded the Bharat Ratna.
“Assam will not forget this insult,” he added.
On Wednesday, a video circulated on social media showing a verbal exchange between Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu inside Parliament.
According to sources, during a demonstration ahead of the day’s proceedings, Gandhi allegedly referred to Bittu as a “traitor friend”. Bittu responded by calling Gandhi a “desh ke dushman” (enemy of the nation).
Bittu, a three-time Member of Parliament and currently Minister of State for Railways, had joined the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections after leaving the Congress. UNI PKJ SSP
