PM Modi should stoutly oppose 50 pc import tariff imposed by US : Stalin

Chennai, Aug 13 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi should stoutly oppose the 50 per cent tariff imposed on Indian imports by US President Donald Trump, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin said.
Speaking at an event organised jointly by the National Committee of Solidarity with Cuba in India and the CPI-M here last evening, Mr Stalin questioned the need for Mr Trump arbitrarily annuouncing imposing of additional tariff at a time when the dates were being finalised for the sixth round of trade talks.
“Already five rounds of trade talks between the two countries have been completed and the dates
are being finalised for the sixth round of negotiations. At this stage what is the need for Mr Trump
to arbitrarily announce imposition of additional tariff”, Mr Stalin asked at the event in which he presented a cheque to Cuban Ambassador to India Juan Carlos Marsán Aguilera in the presence
of CPI(M) leaders M.A. Baby and K. Balakrishnan.
Referring to the oft-repeated claims of Mr. Trump that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, Mr. Stalin questioned Mr Modi’s silence on this.
Mr MOdi not responding to the queries raised by Opposition parties in Parliament showed his weakness, he added.
Stating that there was a crisis across the world, where there was a need to crush imperialism,
Mr. Stalin said imperialist conspiracies did not mean only wars.
“The U.S. imposing 50% tariff on imports from India is also one such conspiracy,” he asserted.
“The BJP-led Union government and Mr Modi should strongly oppose this…Both should provide
a reply to this”, he added.
