New Delhi, Dec 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid glowing tributes to C Rajagopalachari, describing the freedom fighter and statesman as one of the “sharpest minds of the 20th century”.
In a message posted on X, Modi said, “Freedom fighter, thinker, intellectual, statesman… these are some descriptions that come to the mind when one recalls Shri C. Rajagopalachari.”
Posting on his birth anniversary, the Prime Minister said Rajagopalachari “remains one of the sharpest minds of the 20th century, who believed in creating value and upholding human dignity.
“Our nation remembers his enduring contributions with gratitude.”
C Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, was the last Governor-General of India and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.
A towering figure in the freedom movement and later in public life, he was also a prolific writer, political philosopher and one of the founders of the Swatantra Party.
To mark the birth anniversary, PM Modi also shared rarely seen archival material related to Rajaji. The collection includes a photograph of a young Rajagopalachari, the official notification announcing his appointment as a Cabinet minister, a group photograph with volunteers from the 1920s, and a 1922 edition of Young India that Rajaji edited while Gandhi was in jail.
The prime minister said the archival glimpses highlight Rajaji’s remarkable intellectual legacy and his central role in India’s early years as a nation. UNI JRC AAB
