PM Modi lauds Humpy, Erigaisi for FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship medals

New Delhi, Dec 29 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Indian chess stars Koneru Humpy and Arjun Erigaisi for their bronze medal finishes at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha, praising their dedication, grit and growing impact on the global chess stage.
In separate messages on social media platform X, the Prime Minister lauded the achievements of both players, underlining India’s continued rise as a major force in international chess.
“Congratulations to Koneru Humpy, who finished strongly at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha, securing the Bronze medal in the women’s section. Her dedication towards the game is commendable. Best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” PM Modi said.
Commending Arjun Erigaisi’s performance in the highly competitive open section, the Prime Minister wrote, “Proud of Arjun Erigaisi for winning the Bronze medal in the open section at the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha. His grit is noteworthy. Wishing him the very best for his future endeavours.”
The FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship, one of the most prestigious events on the international chess calendar, features elite players from across the world competing in the fast-paced rapid format, which demands sharp preparation, speed and composure under pressure. The 2025 edition in Doha saw intense competition in both the open and women’s sections.
Koneru Humpy, one of India’s most accomplished women chess players and a former World Rapid Champion, once again demonstrated her consistency at the highest level with a strong finish to clinch the bronze medal. A trailblazer for Indian women in chess, Humpy has over the years inspired a new generation of players with her sustained excellence in classical, rapid and blitz formats.
