New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday held delegation-level talks in New Delhi aimed at deepening the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across sectors.
The discussions took place at Hyderabad House, where the two leaders reviewed bilateral ties and explored ways to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, defence, energy and multilateral forums.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal were among the Indian officials present during the talks.
President Lula was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. He received a Guard of Honour and was welcomed by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi.
President Lula also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
The Brazilian President inaugurated the first New Delhi office of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) on Friday. In a post on X, he said the new office would help promote Brazilian goods and services overseas and attract foreign investment into strategic sectors of Brazil’s economy.
Brazil’s Ambassador to India, Kenneth da Nóbrega, highlighted the growing rapport between the two leaders.
“This is taking the bilateral relations historically to a new level. There is a very good chemistry. I think they are not only colleagues, but they have become more and more friends. That’s a fact,” he said.
He added that President Lula is accompanied by the largest Brazilian delegation ever to visit India. “President Lula has come to India with the largest ever delegation, with more than 11 cabinet ministers, more than 300 businessmen, among them 50 CEOs. This is taking the bilateral relations historically to a new level,” the envoy said.
Lula’s visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s trip to Brasília in July 2025, the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Brazil in over five decades.
The two leaders had held a telephone conversation in January during which they exchanged views on regional and global developments. They underscored the importance of reformed multilateralism to effectively address shared global challenges.
