Washington, July 10 (UNI) Former US Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that US President Joe Biden should make a final decision about whether he will run for re-election, reigniting debate about whether the 81-year-old should seek a second term in office.
“It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run,” Pelosi said in an interview with MSNBC when asked whether Biden has her support to be the head of the Democratic ticket. “We’re all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running short.”
Pelosi said Democrats should respect Biden’s decision on whether he will remain the party’s presidential nominee.
“I want him to do whatever he decides to do. And the way it is, whatever he decides we go with,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi added that Biden should be given a chance to demonstrate his ability to host the current NATO conference, calling for Democrats to “hold off” on making public remarks against his candidacy.
Biden’s disastrous performance at the presidential debate with Republican frontrunner Donald Trump on June 27 has reinforced rather than refuted ongoing concerns about his mental fitness to preside over a second presidential term.
