Pahalgam attack: China supports prompt impartial investigation, calls for restraint between India, Pakistan

Beijing/Islamabad, (UNI) China said today that it is closely following the evolving situation between Pakistan and India following the terrorist attack in the Kashmir region, and supports the “prompt initiation of an impartial investigation” and hopes both sides will exercise restraint.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also expressed hope that Pakistan and India will “move toward each other, and work to de-escalate tensions”.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said this during a phone call with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Sunday.

Wang had the phone call on Sunday local time upon request.

During the call, Dar briefed on the latest developments regarding tensions between Pakistan and India following the terrorist attack in the Kashmir region, stating that Pakistan has always been resolute in combating terrorism and opposes actions that could escalate tensions.

Pakistan remains committed to managing the situation through a mature approach and will maintain communication with China and the international community, he said, the Global Times reported.

For his part, Wang stated that China is closely following the evolving situation.

“Combating terrorism constitutes a shared responsibility of all nations, and China consistently supports Pakistan’s firm counter-terrorism actions,” said Wang.

“As an ironclad friend and all-weather strategic cooperative partner, China fully understands Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and supports its efforts to uphold its sovereignty and security interests,” Wang said.

“China supports the prompt initiation of an impartial investigation, emphasizing that conflict serves neither the fundamental interests of India and Pakistan nor regional peace and stability,” Wang said, noting that Beijing hopes both sides will exercise restraint, move toward each other, and work to de-escalate tensions”.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif has called for an impartial investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack, which India has blamed on Pakistani handlers. The terror attack, in which 26 people were killed, has led to deterioration in ties between New Delhi and Islamabad.
