Our Constitution is a living and progressive document: Prez Murmu

New Delhi, Nov 26 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said the Indian Constitution is a living and progressive document, and through it the citizens have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development.

Addressing the joint sitting of Parliament on the occasion of Constitution Day at Samvidhan Sadan, President Murmu said all citizens must imbibe the constitutional ideals into their behaviour and do their fundamental duties and work towards achieving the national goal of a developed India by 2047.

Recalling the contribution of 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly in framing the Constitution, Murmu said the law on women’s reservation has started a new era of women empowerment in our democracy.

“Indian Constitution is a live, progressive document,” she added.

During her speech, Murmu highlighted the significant changes brought about in the last few years. She mentioned the Goods and Services Tax, as well as the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

“In the last few years, the government has done many unprecedented works for all sections of society, especially the backward classes. Poor people have now got security related to health, home, and food,” she said.

The Central government during the day organised an event in the parliament complex to mark 75 years of India’s Constitution, which was adopted on November 26, 1949. It came into effect on January 26, 1950, when India became a republic.

During the event, the President released a commemorative postage and a version of the Constitution of India in the Sanskrit language.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, Union Ministers JP Nadda, Kiren Rijiju, and others read the Preamble to the Indian Constitution on the occasion.

Speaking at the event, Dhankhar said, “This momentous day marks a historic milestone as we celebrate 75 years since Bharat adopted its Constitution, a remarkable achievement for the world’s largest and most dynamic democracy.”

“Our nation thrives with remarkable economic growth, robust infrastructure, and widespread digital adoption, all getting international recognition,” he said, adding “these achievements are vindication that our Constitution has effectively secured Indian democracy.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said, “With the inspiration of PM Modi, in the year 2015, we took the historic decision to celebrate 26th November as Constitution Day. Our Constitution is the result of years of penance, sacrifice, ingenuity, strength, and ability of our people.”

Congratulating citizens, OM Birla said, “Under the leadership of the President, the entire country is together expressing gratitude towards the Constitution today.”
