Osaka eyes revival with Swiatek’s former coach

Tokyo, July 29 (UNI) Renowned Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who played a pivotal role in Iga Swiatek’s rise to the summit of women’s tennis, is set to work with Japan’s Naomi Osaka as the four-time Grand Slam champion seeks to revive her career after a prolonged break.

Wiktorowski, 44, guided Swiatek to four of her six Grand Slam titles and helped her dominate the WTA rankings until their partnership ended in October last year. A Warsaw native, Wiktorowski is widely respected for his strategic acumen and previously coached Polish great Agnieszka Radwanska from 2011 to 2018.

The coaching switch comes at a crucial time for Osaka, who parted ways with French coach Patrick Mouratoglou over the weekend following a second-round exit at the Washington tournament. Osaka had been training under Mouratoglou — famously associated with Serena Williams — since September 2024, during her comeback from maternity leave.

Currently ranked 49th in the world, 27-year-old Osaka is in the early stages of rebuilding her career and form. She took a promising step at the Montreal tournament, where she opened with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 win over Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault. She will next face Russia’s Lyudmila Samsonova in the second round.

Osaka, a former World No.1 and winner of two Australian Open and two US Open titles, took a break from tennis in 2023 to give birth to her daughter, Shai. While her comeback has shown glimpses of brilliance, the Japanese star has been striving for consistency and momentum — something Wiktorowski may now help deliver.
