One killed, two injured as gunmen attack Afghan employees of Indian consulate in Jalalabad

Kabul/New Delhi, Dec 24 (UNI) Unknown gunmen attacked employees of the Indian Consulate in Jalalabad city in Afghanistan today resulting in one person getting killed, while two others sustained injuries in the attack.

According to reports, a vehicle carrying local Afghan staff of the Indian Consulate in Jalalabad was attacked by some armed men.

India had shut the Consulate over four years ago, but it was being manned by some local Afghan staff.

According to social media posts by Afghan journalists, the attack took place near Talashi Chawk in Jalalabad, Nangarhar.

The local staff member of the Indian Consulate, Wadud Khan, was attacked in Jalalabad. One person, reportedly his security guard, was killed, and Khan, along with another individual, sustained injuries.

Confirming the incident, Farid Mamundzay, former Afghan Ambassador to India, said on X:

“Deeply saddened by the attack on the Indian Consulate staff in the eastern city of Jalalabad. My heartfelt condolences to the family of the driver who lost his life, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured, including a dear friend. Violence continues to cost lives across Afghanistan.”

Well-known journalist Bilal Sarwary said on X: “An armed attack has been launched on the employees of the Indian Consulate in the city of Jalalabad. A source at the Taliban security headquarters in Jalalabad confirmed to me that the attack was aimed at a consulate employee. The driver was killed, and Wadud and another person, said to be an Indian employee of the Indian Consulate, were seriously injured. The injured have been transferred to a local hospital in Nangarhar and are currently undergoing treatment.”
