Bhopal: In a proactive initiative to bolster fire safety awareness, Bhopal’s Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) office launched a Fire Safety Week on April 21, 2025. This week-long observance, running from April 21 to 26, aims to educate healthcare professionals across all government health institutions in the district about essential fire safety measures.?

On the inaugural day, CMHO Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari led a hands-on training session for officers and staff, focusing on fire prevention techniques, electrical safety, and emergency evacuation procedures. The training aligns with national directives emphasizing the importance of fire safety in healthcare settings, especially following recent incidents highlighting vulnerabilities in hospital fire preparedness .

Dr. Tiwari emphasized the critical need for all hospital personnel, including doctors and support staff, to be well-versed in standard operating procedures related to fire safety. Collaborations with the municipal corporation and district electrical safety officers are underway to ensure comprehensive fire safety measures are implemented across facilities.?

The training encompasses practical drills, inspections of fire safety equipment, and reviews of fire safety documentation. Given the increased electrical load during summer months due to the use of air conditioning and other equipment, particular attention is being paid to the maintenance of high-power medical devices and ensuring compliance with fire safety standards in oxygen-rich areas like ICUs and operation theaters.?

This initiative underscores Bhopal’s commitment to enhancing fire safety preparedness in healthcare institutions, aiming to safeguard both patients and staff from potential fire hazards.?
