NSUI holds silent protest

Bhopal: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Monday organised a peaceful, Gandhian-style silent protest at the Gandhi statue in Bhopal to oppose the arrest of its national president, Varun Chaudhary. The demonstration was held as a symbolic protest against what the organisation described as attacks on democratic rights and attempts to suppress peaceful movements.

Protesters stood in silence with placards, black armbands and without raising slogans, asserting that the voices of truth, non-violence and democracy cannot be silenced. A two-minute silence was observed to protest rising intolerance and alleged repressive actions by the administration.

NSUI state vice-president Aditya Soni said Chaudhary’s arrest was not linked to any crime but occurred during a peaceful and democratic movement to protect the MGNREGA scheme and employment rights of the poor, calling it a violation of constitutional freedom of expression. District vice-president Rehan Ahmed accused the Centre and crushing student movements raising issues such as employment, education and MGNREGA. Several NSUI office-bearers and workers were present at the protest.
