Bhopal: Members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) organised a candle march in Bhopal on Martyrs’ Day, highlighting a range of issues concerning students and youth. The march began at the 10 Number Square and concluded at the martyrs’ memorial near the Habibganj underpass.
Led by district president Akshay Tomar, participants carried candles and placards while raising slogans against alleged education mafias, the privatisation and commercialisation of education by fake private universities, and arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. They also demanded the early conduct of student union elections and voiced concern over rising substance abuse among youth.
At the memorial site, workers paid floral tributes and observed a two-minute silence in honour of the martyrs. Tomar said the vision of the martyrs was of an India where education is accessible and equitable, but claimed that exploitative practices are undermining students’ futures.
State vice-president Ravi Parmar and general secretary Syed Altamas also addressed the gathering, calling for transparency, accountability, and strict action against illegal activities affecting youth.
