New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) The Delhi Police today said that they have solved the brutal murder of a 32-year-old UPSC aspirant and have arrested three persons, including a woman B.Sc Forensic Science student who used her specialized knowledge to stage the crime as a fire accident.
The accused have been identified as Amrita Chauhan (21), her ex-boyfriend Sumit Kashyap (27), and Sandeep Kumar (29), all residents of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The case dates back to October 6, when a fire was reported on a fourth-floor residence in Gandhi Vihar. After extinguishing the blaze, police discovered the severely burned body of Ram Kesh Meena, a UPSC aspirant living at the address. Initial investigation revealed suspicious circumstances. CCTV footage analysis showed two masked persons entering the building around midnight, followed by Amrita Chauhan and another person leaving the building at approximately 2:57 AM. The fire erupted shortly after their departure.
Technical surveillance revealed that Amrita’s mobile phone was located near the crime scene at the time of incident. Further investigation led to her apprehension on October 18, followed by the arrests of Sumit Kashyap on October 21 and Sandeep Kumar on October 23. During interrogation, Amrita revealed that she had been in a live-in relationship with the deceased since May 2025. The motive for murder emerged when she discovered that Meena had made obscene videos and photos of her and stored them in a hard disk, refusing to delete them despite her repeated requests.
Amrita conspired with her ex-boyfriend Sumit and their friend Sandeep to execute the murder in a manner that would appear to be a fire accident. Using her knowledge of forensic science gained through her studies and crime web series, she planned the elaborate cover-up. On the night of October 5-6, the trio strangulated and beat Meena to death. They then poured oil, ghee, and wine on the body. Sumit, who works as an LPG cylinder distributor, placed a gas cylinder near the victim’s head and opened the regulator before igniting the fire. The cylinder exploded about an hour later, severely burning the body.
Police have recovered the hard disk containing the obscene videos, a trolley bag, the victim’s shirt, and two mobile phones used by the accused during the commission of the crime. All three accused are in police custody, and further investigation is underway.
