Lucknow, Dec 30 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh is experiencing severe cold and there is no respite from this yet, as rain is expected on New Year’s Day.
On Tuesday morning, 37 cities, including Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Ballia, and Kanpur, have been engulfed in fog. The roads are deserted as visibility is so low that nothing can be seen even 20 meters away.
Due to fog, more than 100 trains are running 2 to 15 hours late at several railway stations, including Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Prayagraj.
More than 10 flights have been cancelled bound for Lucknow and Varanasi.
Barabanki and Fatehpur were the coldest districts, with temperatures reaching 8°C.
On Monday, temperatures dropped by 2 to 4 degrees in more than 25 cities.
The Meteorological Department has issued a severe cold alert for the next three days. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and they suggesred people only to leave the house when absolutely necessary and to take special care of the elderly and children.
The Uttar Pradesh government is also on alert in view of the severe cold. Schools and colleges have been closed until January 1. Officers have been instructed to immediately go into the field. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed that officials should assess the ground situation and ensure the availability of bonfires and blankets in public places.
Meanwhile, Lucknow meteorologist Atul Singh said,”It”s snowing in the mountains, leading to coldwave in the state and is unlikely to decrease. Over the next three days, the cold will increase both at night and during the day. Rain is expected on January 1.”
