Washington, Dec 6 (UNI) The United States has not changed the level of readiness of its troops in South Korea, Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder has said.
“So, first of all, to my knowledge… no change in force posture. And, you know, we’re obviously ensuring—doing due diligence in terms of accountability and things like that. But I’m not aware of any significant impact operationally, physically, or safety-wise on any US forces in South Korea,” Ryder told a Thursday briefing when asked about the impact of the current situation in the country on US troops stationed there.
The Pentagon remains in contact with the South Korean Defense Ministry, but there have been no contacts between the ministers, he added.
On Tuesday, the South Korean president declared martial law “to purge pro-North Korean forces and maintain the liberal constitutional order.” Yoon claimed that attempts by the South Korean opposition to impeach several high-ranking officials in his government posed a threat of political paralysis.
The South Korean parliament voted to lift martial law. Of the 300 lawmakers, 190 were present, and the decision was unanimous. Yoon later lifted martial law.
