New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) The high-stakes talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian
President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for peace in Ukraine ended without any agreement after nearly
three hours of brain-storming discussions.
The two leaders addressed a press conference after their talks but did not take any questions. The two leaders shook hands and left the press conference.
There was no agreement to resolve the Ukrainian issue or stop the war in Ukraine. However, both leaders described the talks as productive. They said progress had been made on some issues but did not give any details.
“There’s no deal until there’s a deal” Trump said.
President Putin extended an invitation to Trump for next round of talks in Moscow saying “Next time in Moscow.” Trump said he would “probably see you again very soon.”
President Trump said he had a “very productive” meeting on ending the Ukraine war.
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left,” Trump said. “We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.”
President Putin said the talks were “constructive” and “mutually respectful.”
“Our negotiations took place in a constructive and mutually respectful atmosphere. They were very thorough and useful,” Putin said.
Both leaders have already left for their respective destinations. It was not immediately known whether any other issues were discussed at the meeting.
Earlier both leaders arrived in Alaska for their crucial meeting accompanied by high-level delegations. President Putin was accompanied by his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Policy Aide Yuri Ushakov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Envoy on foreign investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev.
The US delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for peace missions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said ahead of the talks that Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to bring the war to an end.
‘’We count on a strong position from America. Everything will depend on this – the Russians factor in American strength. Russia must end the war. The killings must stop. A meeting of leaders is needed–at the very least, Ukraine, America, and the Russian side–and it is precisely in such a format that effective decisions are possible. Security guarantees are needed. Lasting peace is very much needed,’’ Zelenskyy said.
