Shillong, May 8 (UNI) The Meghalaya government on Thursday imposed a night curfew along the India-Bangladesh border due to the current situation in neighbouring country and to prevent infiltration, militant movement, and illegal cross-border activities.
In a separate order, the District Magistrates of East Khasi Hills R.M.Kurbah and West Jaintia Hills Abhinav Kumar Singh has enforced the night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am within a 1-kilometre radius from the international border.
The curfew will remain in force for two months.
“There is likelihood of cross border movement along the international border with Bangladesh by the unwanted elements including people, members of proscribed militant groups ,smugglers and any other illegal activities on India- Bangladesh Border,” the order, issued under Section 163 of the BNSS, stated.
The orders said that the region is particularly vulnerable due to unfenced border areas, where anti-national elements may attempt to gather during night hours to carry out nefarious activities.
Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, of which 49.216 km is unfenced and has terrain difficult to patrol.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has raised the “bar of alertness” at the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya sector.
“We have raised the bar of our alertness at the borders. We have complete night dominance at these difficult terrain,” Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, O.P. Upadhyay said.
