Bhopal: The historic Gauhar Mahal is currently a vibrant hub of traditional art, hosting the “Swadeshi Mela” organized by the Madhya Pradesh Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation. This event, part of the “Swadeshi Seva Pakhwada,” aims to promote local crafts and foster the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).
A group of students from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) visited the fair, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Madhya Pradesh’s heritage. They engaged directly with over 50 artisans, gaining firsthand insight into the intricate techniques and cultural stories behind their crafts. The visit bridged the gap between modern design education and ancient artistic traditions.
Students were particularly captivated by the diverse range of arts under the “One District, One Product” initiative. They explored the rich history of Bhopal’s Zari-Zardozi embroidery, the vibrant colors of Ujjain’s Batik print, and the natural dyeing techniques of Dhar’s Bagh print. Artisans like Sufiyan, Iqbal, and Firoz Jahan shared their knowledge, explaining how each craft embodies a unique blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and local identity. The visit served as a profound source of inspiration, showcasing the enduring relevance and beauty of India’s indigenous arts.
