NHRC seeks report on Cuddalore train-school van collision

New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on the train-school van collision in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, on July 8, which claimed the lives of three children and left several others injured.

It has issued notices to the Chairman, Railway Board, Ministry of Railways, and the Chief Secretary and DGP of Tamil Nadu, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The commission has also asked for the current health status of the injured children.

In a statement issued today, the commission said the incident raises serious concerns of human rights violations, especially in light of the fact that an underpass had been sanctioned by the Railways to replace the level crossing but the project was delayed due to the lack of approval from the District Collector for over a year.

“The commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights,” the NHRC said.

The media report, published on July 9, had highlighted that the Southern Railway had already approved the underpass at the accident site, but work had not started due to administrative delays.
