NHRC seeks report from Punjab DGP in Zimbabwean student’s death

New Delhi, Aug 27 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the media reports concerning the death of a Zimbabwean student, allegedly due to injuries sustained in an assault in Bathinda, Punjab.

The student, who was pursuing graduation at Guru Kashi University, reportedly died at AIIMS, Bathinda on August 21, 2025, following the attack, said the top rights body in a statement here.

According to reports, the victim was assaulted on August 13, 2025, following an altercation with a security guard. It is alleged that the guard, along with a group of accomplices, attacked the student. An FIR has reportedly been registered in connection with the incident.

Taking note of the serious human rights concerns raised by the report, the commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police, Punjab, and the Registrar of Guru Kashi University, Bathinda. Both the authorities have been directed to submit a detailed report within two weeks, said the statement.

The commission underlined that if the facts said in the media are true, the incident involves grave violations of human rights and underscores the need for immediate institutional accountability.
