NHRC registers case in infant’s death in alleged caste attack at Nagarkurnool jathara in Telangana

Hyderabad/New Delhi, Feb 22 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case over the death of a two-month-old infant following an alleged caste-based attack during the Kummera Mallanna Jathara held in Kummera village of Nagarkurnool district, Telangana on Feb 18.
According to reports, a family belonging to the Backward Class (OBC) community – Chakali Chandrakala, her son Sakali Ganesh and daughter-in-law Mounika – had gone to the temple for darshan when they were allegedly stopped at the entrance and denied entry.
The family alleged that upper-caste individuals, including the village sarpanch, attacked them.
During the altercation, the two-month-old infant was reportedly knocked from the mother’s arms or crushed in the melee, leading to the child losing consciousness.
The infant later succumbed, triggering protests by BC organisations in the district.
The victims have alleged that they were physically assaulted and subjected to casteist abuse. They also claimed that the police initially failed to register a case despite the existence of video evidence.
Police, however, stated that the incident involved stone-pelting and clashes between two groups, with cross-complaints filed.
The Police have registered multiple FIRs and an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Telangana Jagruthi President K. Kavitha on Sunday strongly condemned the death of a two-month-old infant following an alleged caste-based attack during the Kummera Mallanna Jathara in Nagarkurnool district.
In a statement, Kavitha expressed deep anguish over the incident and alleged that a Rajaka family was targeted due to caste discrimination.
Kavitha termed the incident inhumane and demanded strict action against those responsible. She urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the culprits are brought to justice. UNI KNR KK
