New Delhi, June 25 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today said it has taken suo motu cognisance of the reported deaths of three prisoners in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The top rights body has issued notices to the state’s Director General of Prisons and the District Police Commissioner, calling for a detailed report within two weeks.
The report is expected to include the inquest and post-mortem examination reports, the initial health screening details of all three prisoners, as well as the magisterial enquiry reports, said the NHRC in a statement here.
According to media reports, three prisoners died in state custody in Varanasi on June 15 and June 16, 2025.
One of the deceased was a male doctor, and a female prisoner died in the District Jail due to illness, while another prisoner, lodged in the Central Jail, died from a heart attack.
The NHRC noted that if the allegations are true, the incidents raise serious concerns regarding violations of human rights.
