New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today said it has issued notices to the chief secretary and director general of police, Uttar Pradesh, following the death of a 25-year-old patient at Kanpur Medical College & Hospital earlier this month.
In a statement here, the commission said it has sought a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.
The NHRC took suo motu cognisance of media reports which stated that due to mismanagement by hospital and police personnel, the youth died on August 9, 2025, after being denied timely and proper treatment.
“Reportedly, two persons admitted him to the hospital in a serious condition and left. He was in an unconscious state,” the commission noted.
According to the reports, the attending doctor referred the patient to another hospital. However, as he had no attendant, the hospital requested police assistance to provide an escort. The police escort, it is alleged, did not arrive for hours during which the patient passed away.
Further, the body reportedly remained in the ward for several hours, causing distress among other patients, before it was moved to the mortuary.
The NHRC observed that if the allegations are substantiated, they raise serious concerns over violation of human rights.
The commission’s notice also referred to conflicting accounts published on August 11, with police stating that a guard was sent but the transfer could not be effected due to ambulance unavailability, while hospital authorities maintained that an ambulance was available.
