New Zealand thrash Sri Lanka by eight wickets

Sharjah, Oct 12 (UNI) Georgia Plimmer’s explosive half-century propelled New Zealand to a convincing eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, solidifying their position in the race for the top two spots in Group A of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Chasing a target of 116, New Zealand reached 118 for the loss of just two wickets with 2.3 overs to spare. This win not only boosts New Zealand’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages but also marks the end of Sri Lanka’s tournament, as they became the first team to exit the competition without a single victory.

Plimmer, named Player of the Match, scored a vital 53 runs off 44 balls, hitting four boundaries during her innings. She was well-supported by all-rounder Amelia Kerr, who finished unbeaten on 34 from 31 balls. Their partnership ensured a steady chase after a strong start from the White Ferns.

New Zealand’s openers, Suzie Bates and Plimmer, made a significant contribution, putting together a solid 49-run opening partnership before Bates was bowled by Sachini Nisansala for 17. Kerr quickly built momentum with Plimmer, maintaining a healthy run rate throughout their innings.

Sophie Devine capped off the victory with a brisk 13 not out from just eight deliveries, sealing the win with a powerful six that echoed the team’s commanding performance.

Despite their exit, Sri Lanka showed signs of improvement, with captain Chamari Athapaththu leading from the front, scoring a commendable 35 runs from 41 balls.

Sri Lanka had a promising start after winning the toss and opting to bat, reaching 34 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. However, their momentum faltered as they struggled to accelerate.

The turning point came during the middle overs when Kerr shone with the ball, taking two wickets for just 13 runs in her four overs. She dismissed Athapaththu and made crucial contributions in the field, taking a catch and removing Kavisha Dilhari leg before wicket.

Sri Lanka managed to post a total of 115, which proved insufficient against the formidable New Zealand batting lineup. Their tournament ended with three defeats in as many matches, leaving them without a win.

With this victory, New Zealand is poised to face Pakistan in their final group match on Monday. They will enter the match knowing precisely what they need to qualify for the semifinals, as four teams still have a chance to reach the final four.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka must reflect on their performance as they exit the tournament, seeking to regroup for future competitions.
