New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside the criminal proceedings against 30 Army personnel implicated in the killing of 13 civilians at Mon district in Nagaland in 2021.
A bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath allowed the appeal filed by the wife of one of the officers implicated in the case.
The bench said “In view of the discussions, The proceedings in the said First Information Reports (FIRs) shall stand closed, however if sanction is granted for disciplinary action, it may be taken to their logical conclusion, ” the bench said.
The bench clarified that on the issue of disciplinary action, the Armed Forces can do the needful.
The incident dates back to December 4, 2021 when an Army team allegedly fired at a pickup truck carrying miners in Oting village in eastern Nagaland, mistaking them for militants, killing six civilians.
Eight more civilians were killed after security forces allegedly opened fire as the incident triggered violence in the area.
After the incident, the Nagaland Assembly in a special session “unanimously resolved” to demand the Centre to repeal AFSPA from Nagaland.
