Mumbai: Legendary comedian Asrani dies aged 84

Mumbai Oct 20 (UNI) Legendary comedian Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away in Mumbai today after a prolonged illness.

Asrani, 84, is survived by his wife, actress Manju Asrani, his sister, and a nephew.

His last rites were performed at Santacruz cemetery which was attended by family members friend and relatives.

The iconic star, whose career spanned more than five decades and over 350 films, passed away at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai, following complications from a prolonged illness that led to fluid accumulation in his lungs.

Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur and an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Asrani carved out an enduring legacy through his impeccable timing and endearing portrayals.

He first captured the public’s imagination with his eccentric turn as the prison warden in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay, immortalising the line “Hum Angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain!” His versatility shone through roles in beloved comedies such as Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, Rafoo Chakkar, and Chala Murari Hero Banne.

Asrani enjoyed a prolific onscreen partnership with superstar Rajesh Khanna, appearing alongside him in more than 25 films between 1972 and 1991.

During the 2000s, Asrani proved his timeless appeal with memorable performances in modern hits including Hera Pheri, Dhamal, Bhagam Bhag, Garam Masala, and De Dana Dan. He also ventured behind the camera, directing six films and earning two Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian for his work in Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar (1974) and Balika Badhu (1977).

Today’s final rites were conducted quietly at Santacruz (Shastri Nagar) Crematorium, honouring Asrani’s wish for an intimate ceremony attended only by close family and friends.

Tributes have poured in from across the film industry and from fans nationwide, all mourning the loss of a performer whose gentle humour and warm presence left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema.

Govardhan Asrani’s passing is not only the end of an era in Bollywood comedy but also the farewell to a cherished artist whose work will continue to delight and inspire generations to come.
