Lucknow, August 4 (UNI) In a major development, Umar Ansari, the younger son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was arrested late Sunday night by Ghazipur police from Lucknow.
Umar was apprehended from the MLA residence complex at Darulshafa, where he was staying at the official residence of his elder brother Abbas Ansari, a legislator from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).
According to ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash, Umar was wanted in a case involving forgery and criminal conspiracy. He is accused of submitting a fake petition to the court using forged signatures of his absconding mother, Afshan Ansari, who is currently carrying a bounty of ₹1 lakh on her head. The petition allegedly sought the release of property seized under the Gangsters Act.
The residence from where Umar was arrested is located in a high-security zone housing current and former MLAs, making the arrest politically significant. Following his arrest, Umar was taken to Ghazipur, where further legal proceedings, including court production and interrogation, will take place.
As per the FIR filed at the Mohammadabad Police Station in Ghazipur, Umar filed the court petition on behalf of his mother, who is a declared fugitive. The petition included documents purportedly signed by Afshan Ansari. However, a detailed examination by the government counsel revealed that the signatures did not match her previous verified documents.
This discrepancy triggered a deeper investigation.
Lawyer Liaqat Ali had claimed in court that the petition was genuinely signed by Afshan and delivered through Umar. However, forensic analysis contradicted this assertion, revealing clear discrepancies and indicating an attempt to mislead the judiciary.
Preliminary investigation reports suggest that Umar and his legal counsel orchestrated a planned criminal conspiracy to mislead the court using forged documents. Police believe the motive was to regain seized property linked to Afshan Ansari. Authorities say a charge sheet will be filed soon, and the court may be urged to take strict action in the matter.
Afshan Ansari has been declared a wanted criminal by police departments in both Ghazipur and Mau, each placing a ₹50,000 bounty on her arrest. A lookout notice has also been issued for her arrest.
This arrest adds to the growing legal troubles for the Ansari family. Abbas Ansari, Umar’s elder brother, is already out on bail after being sentenced to two years in a previous case, which also led to the loss of his MLA status. With Umar’s arrest, the family finds itself increasingly entangled in legal and political challenges.
