International Recognition for State Tiger Force

Bhopal: In a proud moment for Madhya Pradesh, Deputy Conservator of Forests (IFS), Ritesh Sarothia, has been honoured with the prestigious The Asia Environmental Enforcement Recognition of Excellence Award 2024-25 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The award recognizes his outstanding national and international work in controlling forest and wildlife crime. The virtual ceremony took place on October 17 in Bangkok.

Combating Transnational Environmental Crime

The UNEP award is presented to individuals and government entities demonstrating exceptional leadership in enforcing national laws against transboundary environmental crimes, including the illegal trade of endangered species, minerals, and hazardous waste. Sarothia, who heads MP’s State Tiger Force, was selected by an international jury comprising representatives from Interpol, the World Bank, and other leading global bodies.

Dismantling Global Poaching Networks

Sarothia and his team were specifically recognized for their success against international organized wildlife cartels spanning India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. His efforts, involving coordination with multiple agencies, led to the scientific investigation and successful prosecution of syndicate leaders. Under his leadership, the MP State Tiger Force has arrested over 1,500 accused in recent years, with their conservation work receiving commendation from Interpol on four separate occasions. This marks Sarothia’s fourth international award.
