- Appreciates conservation efforts for critically endangered species
Sidhi – Dr. Rajesh Mishra, MP from Sidhi, visited the Jogdaha Ghat in Son Gharial Sanctuary on Wednesday. He expressed delight at the sight of newly hatched gharial babies frolicking in the water. Along with 132 hatchlings, seven female and one male gharial, as well as two crocodiles, were also observed.
Conservation progress briefed
Amit Kumar Dubey, Field Director of Sanjay Tiger Reserve, briefed the MP on the challenges and ongoing efforts for gharial conservation. Dr. Mishra praised the initiatives and assured full support for future programs.
Return of the male Gharial
Since 2015, the sanctuary lacked a male gharial, halting breeding. A male was introduced from Chambal Sanctuary in 2022 but was lost during the 2023 monsoon floods. A new male was reintroduced on January 14, 2025, in the presence of MLA Vishwamitra Pathak. This led to successful egg-laying in March and 132 hatchlings between May 21–25.
Conservation hub reviving
Due to strong local and administrative collaboration, the sanctuary is emerging as a crucial breeding ground for gharials, skimmers, and other aquatic species. A 2025 census recorded 38 gharials, 74 crocodiles, 41 skimmers, and over 4,000 birds. The Son Gharial Sanctuary, established in 1981 across 209 km of river stretch, is now Madhya Pradesh’s second successful natural breeding habitat for gharials after Chambal.
