- Every citizen now carries Rs 55,000 debt burden, claims congress
Bhopal, The Madhya Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is preparing to take on an additional Rs 4,300 crore loan, even as the state’s debt burden surpasses Rs 4.5 lakh crore.
According to Congress State President Jitu Patwari, the Reserve Bank of India has already initiated the process for selling government securities to raise the funds. Patwari criticized the move, calling it another blow to the state’s already strained financial health.
= Rapid rise in borrowing
Experts note a sharp acceleration in borrowing under the current administration, with the state reportedly taking loans averaging Rs 5,000 crore every month. As a result, each citizen in Madhya Pradesh now carries an estimated debt of over Rs 55,000, raising concerns about long-term fiscal sustainability.
= Luxury over logic?
Despite the mounting debt, government spending shows no signs of restraint. Congress leaders have pointed to recent luxury expenditures—including the purchase of a new state aircraft, high-end vehicles for ministers, and lavish refurbishments of government bungalows.
“The government is taking loans not for public welfare, but to fund extravagance,” said a Congress spokesperson. The party alleges that up to 50% of borrowed funds are lost to scams and commissions, rather than being used for genuine developmental work.
= Opposition calls for transparency
Congress has demanded greater transparency and accountability in public spending, warning that unchecked borrowing combined with luxury spending could push the state further into economic distress.
