Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is in the grip of persistent storms and rainfall, fueled by continuous moisture flowing from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. A cyclonic circulation hovers over the northeastern part of the state, while a trough passes through its southern reaches.
Today, Friday, June 27, many districts witnessed significant rainfall. Ratlam, for instance, experienced a sudden downpour, transitioning from a drizzle at 1 PM to heavy rain by 2:15 PM. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for numerous districts across Madhya Pradesh for the next 2-3 days, with winds expected to gust between 30-40 kmph.
Dr. Divya Surendran, a scientist at IMD Bhopal, noted that a strong weather system developed on Thursday, delivering nearly 1.75 inches of rain by 5:30 PM, which continued intermittently until 11:30 PM, totaling 66.2 mm (2.60 inches) in eight hours.
District-wide alerts issued for upcoming downpour
June 28 Forecast: Heavy rain alerts are in place for Bhind, Morena, Damoh, Jabalpur, Seoni, Balaghat, Mandla, Dindori, and Anuppur, with up to 4.5 inches of rain possible in 24 hours. Other districts may also experience storms and rain.
June 29 Forecast: Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Datia, and Bhind are on alert for heavy rainfall. Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and other districts are also likely to receive rain.
June 30 Orange Alert for Extremely Heavy Rain: Damoh, Panna, and Katni are under an Orange Alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Sheopur, Morena, Bhind, Ashoknagar, Satna, Jabalpur, and Umaria may also experience heavy rain. A yellow alert for rain is active across other districts.
The IMD attributes these conditions to a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and an associated cyclonic circulation, along with a trough extending across central India. Another cyclonic circulation is active over northeast Madhya Pradesh.
