Ahmedabad, Aug 25 (UNI) Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu today secured the gold medal in Women’s 48kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships being played here.
Mirabai finished at the top of the podium with a total lift of 193kg, 84kgs in snatch and 109 kgs in clean and jerk.
This was the first time she was competing since her fourth place finish at the Paris Olympics.
Speaking to the press after her victory the Manipur girl said: “I am truly delighted to win the gold medal here in Ahmedabad. Competing on home soil after a year since the Paris Olympics made this moment even more special, and the support from the crowd gave me immense motivation. This victory is the result of relentless hard work, my coaches’ guidance, and the constant encouragement of the nation.”
The 31-year-old expressed her resolve to come up with a stellar performence at the upcoming World Championships
“It’s a great confidence boost as I prepare for the World Championships in October, and I’ll continue to give my best to make India proud on the international stage.”
The 2025 World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Førde, Norway from October 1 to 10, 2025.
The gold medal also ensured Chanu’s direct qualification for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships serve as a qualification event for the Commonwealth Games.
