Los Angeles, (UNI) Lionsgate revealed today that actor-director Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated The Resurrection of the Christ is being broken up into two films.
Part One will hit theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while Part Two will launch 40 days later on Ascension Day, which falls on May 6, 2027.
The Resurrection of the Christ parts one and two are Gibson’s follow-ups to his landmark film The Passion of the Christ, which until last year was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically and well as the highest-grossing indie title in history, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Gibson is producing the ambitious project with his partner at Icon Productions, Bruce Davey.
Passion of the Christ, which starred Jim Caviezel as Christ and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalen, was produced and self-financed by Gibson and his production company for a reported USD 30 million.
Resurrection has been in the works for close to a decade and Gibson has stated in interviews that the aim is to have Caviezel reprise his role. Production will likely begin in late summer in European locations.
