Massive fire erupts near Rithala metro station in Delhi; one killed

New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) A man lost his life while another sustained burns after a massive blaze erupted near Rithala metro station in Delhi’s Rohini. It spread to around 500 shanties, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the fire that broke out late Friday evening was fully brought under control with the deployment of adequate teams, and relief is being provided to those affected.

Taking it X, she said that the injured had been rushed to the hospital, and relief and rehabilitation efforts were underway. “We arranged food, water, and temporary shelters for those affected,” she stated.

According to Delhi Police, several LPG cylinders are believed to have exploded late Friday evening, fanning the blaze and creating panic in the area.

Dense smoke was seen rising from the site while residents attempted to salvage their belongings and relocate to safer areas. Preliminary information suggests that at least 400 shanties were gutted in the incident, a fire official said.

A fire officer said, “A call reporting the blaze was received at 10:56 pm, following which multiple fire tenders and firefighters were rushed to the location.”

Police cordoned off the area, while additional fire tenders were kept on standby to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

The fire was brought under control by early morning, a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said. One person, identified as Munna, died in the blaze, while another, Rajesh, sustained injuries.

Chief Minister Gupta stated the Delhi government is extending every possible support to the families impacted by the incident.

“Arrangements for food and drinking water have been made for the affected people. Temporary shelter sites are being established, while a permanent relief centre at Rithala community centre is operational,” CM Gupta posted.

“A 24×7 CAT ambulances and medical teams have been deployed. Debris removal work by MCD and verification of affected families by the revenue department are ongoing,” she said.
