Libraries preserve and disseminate knowledge

Libraries preserve, promote and disseminate knowledge in the same way as banks play a role in preserving and promoting the wealth of the society and the nation. Libraries have had a special significance in Indian history. The libraries of Nalanda, Vikramshila and Takshila were centres of learning and storehouses of knowledge, unfortunately these great centres became targets of foreign invaders. Ujjain has been a confluence of religion, spirituality and knowledge and science. Baba Mahakal is seated at the centre of time calculation and Ujjain’s Sandipani Ashram was the Gurukul of Lord Shri Krishna and Balram.
Training in library science
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said that Vikram University of Ujjain, established in the name of Emperor Vikramaditya, was the first university in the state to provide training in library science. Ujjain’s Scindia Oriental Research Institute is known for its huge and rare collection of manuscripts. Padma Shri Dr. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India, has been the first visiting professor of this university.
