‘Mahavatar Narsimha’ enters Oscar race in ‘Best Animated Category’

Mumbai, Nov 29 (UNI) India’s mythological animated film “Mahavatar Narsimha” has made a significant global leap by entering the Oscar race for ‘Best Animated Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.’
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has unveiled a list of 35 animated features under consideration for the 2026 Oscars, placing the Indian film among major international contenders.
‘Mahavatar Narsimha’ will compete against high-profile titles such as “KPop Demon Hunter,” “Zootopia 2,” and “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle.”
In its official announcement, AMPAS noted that while 35 films are currently eligible, several must still complete their qualifying releases and comply with all category rules to advance in the voting process. The final five nominees will be announced after the voting rounds.
The Academy further clarified that members of the Animation Branch automatically vote in the category, while other Academy members may opt in if they meet the minimum viewing requirements.
Animated features submitted for International Feature Film consideration are also eligible in the animated category, and films may additionally qualify for Best Picture and other awards.
Directed by Ashwin Kumar and produced by Shilpaa Dhawan under Hombale Films, Mahavatar Narsimha portrays the story of Lord Narasimha, the half-man, half-lion avatar of Lord Vishnu.
The film marks the first installment in the planned seven-part Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, inspired by the ten avatars of Vishnu. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
